Tucked into the Cliffwood Campground at Mirror Lake State Park, the Cabin in the Woods offers a peaceful, barrier-free retreat designed specifically for visitors with disabilities. Built by the Telephone Pioneers of America and gifted to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in 1991, this log cabin was the first of its kind in the state park system. It remains a model of inclusive outdoor access today.

The cabin is located between campsites 131 and 135 and offers around 700 square feet of living space. It includes a small kitchen with accessible countertops, a three-burner stove, microwave, and refrigerator. A cozy living room features a full-size sofa sleeper, and the bedroom has two single beds—one of which is automatic for improved accessibility.

The bathroom is thoughtfully designed with a wheel-in shower, fold-down bench, and a shower-commode chair. A Hoyer lift is available for use throughout the cabin, and both heating and air conditioning are provided for comfort in any season.

Outside, guests will find a screened porch with a panoramic view of Mirror Lake, a fire ring, a post-mounted grill, and a picnic table. An accessible asphalt path connects the cabin to an observation deck, offering another peaceful spot to take in the lake and the surrounding forest.

The Cabin in the Woods can accommodate up to six guests and is available for rent from approximately May 15 through October 15 each year. Because demand is high and access is limited to people with disabilities and their guests, reservations are capped at four nights per group per year. These cabins are intended for those who may be least able to use traditional campsites, ensuring better access for those who need it most.

Reservations open each January and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A completed Cabin Reservation Request Form must be submitted by mail or in person to the park office.

Note for future visitors: Beginning in 2026, Mirror Lake State Park will begin a construction project to expand and resurface the boat landing parking lot and nearby roadway. While dates are still being finalized, guests should expect potential disruptions to the cabin’s availability during that year.
